Part 1 - Some Inspiration behind our Music, Art, and Dance Camps and Adult Classes In Bridgehampton, NY and Hunterdon County, New Jersey

Years ago I attended a week long music workshop at Banff, in western Canada, near Calgary. It’s an incredible place dedicated to the arts where people in all sorts of fields including the sciences can meet up. Essentially it’s a place where one can retreat from the world and focus on his or her craft or field of study. I was amazed a place like this existed in the world.

I had never seen anything like it in the United States.

This magical place lies in the background behind the concept of Rock Camp, Diving Into Art, and Dance Intensive…..create a space where talented artists can share their knowledge with others in a way where students finish the experience with an entirely new level of skills, technique and inspiration.

What Are We all About? What Makes Rock Camp, Diving Into Art, and Dance Intensive Distinctive?

What makes Rock Camp, Diving Into Art, and Dance Intensive one the premier camps in New Jersey and the Hamptons for camps in music, art, or dance?

3 Reasons

  1. Passion. All of the teachers at Rock Camp, Diving Into Art, and Dance Intensive at our locations in New Jersey and Bridgehampton, have a true passion for their art. That is number one in importance for us.

  2. Love of Teaching and a Smile. Secondly, every teacher has to really love sharing his or her knowledge with others, and have an innate curiosity to learn more about their area of music, art, and dance. Plus, they should be fun to be around and work with!

  3. An Active Career and Actively Growing. While passion and a love of teaching would rank in the top 2 slots of importance, it is VERY impotent to us that every teacher is actively engaged in his or her career as a musician, artist, and dancer. We look for teachers who actively curious and growing as a musicians, artist, or dancer on stage and in the practice room. We think that brings a certain relevance and depth to the students’ experiences.

Diving Into Art

So this year we are launching an amazing new program in Bridgehampton, NY and in Lebanon, NJ, Diving Into Art. What is this all about?

Well, the concept is very similar to Rock Camp and Dance Intensive.

#1 - First and foremost, we want to create a fun and social environment where every student - whether school age or an adult - whether a total beginner or advanced student - is comfortable and making friends. Classes will be help outside, so there will be plenty of room to have social distancing while also creating community.

#2 -Instruction that is rooted in learning the fundamentals AND around the interests of every student.

We think that in order to break out of your comfort zone and surge forward in your skills, technique, and artistry, one must master the fundamentals. This is definitely a work in progress, but a powerful mindset that leads to great things. We ALSO believe that instruction should be based around the interests of the students as a starting a point.

So basically if you have a student who loves anime drawing, or sculpture, or photography, etc…our teachers will use THAT as a reference point to learn the fundamentals………..once that is coupled with passion and interest and enthusiasm…….well, you get serious growth.

#3 - We are not school! I mean this is summer after all! If anything, we consider ourselves kind of anti-school in that we have structure and a curriculum but we pride ourselves in being nimble in meeting the interests and personalities of our students.

On Friday, the last day of Diving Into Art students will have an outdoor exhibit in which students can show what they have been working on. This is totally optional for students. This will likely be called “A Work in Progress” Exhibit, so students students can demonstrate what they have been working on through the week.

Hello Summer 2021 - A Time For Creating Music, Art, and Dance

We are so excited to see you all this July for our music, art, and dance sessions.

We are also thrilled to offer adult classes this summer in the afternoons/early evenings in music, art, and yoga.

Here its the latest:

Rock Camp. Our faculty has been meeting up to talk through the curriculum for this summer. We are preparing our instruments and necessary equipment to make Rock Camp a fun, safe, and inspiring experience for everyone. We have many keyboards, guitars, amps, and other music equipment that we have always brought outside in years past, and this year will be more of the same. So excited to meet our musicians - middle schoolers, high schoolers, and those in our adult classes - in Bridgehampton, NY and Lebanon, NJ this July.

Diving Into Art. Like RC, the faculty has been meeting up to discuss the details of our curriculum this summer. Much of our Diving Into Art program in Bridgehampton, NY, and in Lebanon, New Jersey will focus on drawing fundamentals and painting (with acrylic and watercolors), AND also electives in subjects such as anime drawing, sculpture/ceramics/pottery, photography, and film. We’ll be updating the blog and site regularly on new developments.

Dance Intensive. Our dance faculty has also been discussing the dance experience for our students in Bridgehampton. This year, the dance program will happen in the afternoon, 3- 6 pm, where students will study ballet and modern for 90 minutes, and then study hip hop for another 90 minute session. Very excited that we are offering a yoga class to adults this year as well from 6 - 7 pm. Stay tuned for more news and updates on the dance and yoga front.

The Roots of Rock Camp, the One of a Kind Music Camp in New Jersey and the Hamptons

This is our story.

Eleven years Rock Camp started as an idea in which for one week students, between ages 7 - 19, would learn music from performing musicians in a particular way. Rather than teach music classes in the way it is taught in school, students would learn in small groups and mentor with a variety of performing musicians and learn from their peers.

But the story actually starts earlier than this. Let’s rewind.

When I was a kid, I took piano lessons from a few different teachers. I loved music but I did not like the lessons. Rather than look at music as if one was exploring a new world, my early teachers had the view that I should learn nursery rhythms and little kid tunes, read simple notation, and then little by little progress to more challenging music. Sound logical. And yet even at an early age of 12 or 13 years old, I thought “why do I have to learn this little kid music and wait around for a couple years to get to the music I really want to play (at that time it was rock-n-roll)?” So I quit lessons with that teacher. Eventually I had a different teacher, but it was the same story. I quit again.

And then something happened, really be accident.

As I went through middle and high school, I was lucky to take an art class. The art teacher, Mr. Reed, has a beat up piano in his room (painted on the sides), all of the walls had student work, the ceiling too. This is where music came alive. He showed me and a group of other students how to play the music of Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Three Dog Night, and many many tunes in the rock and blues realm. We played duets. We played along with records. We later played in small groups, at school functions, at parties, at cafes, and we just kept learning. A new world opened up to all of us. Later, I was lucky enough to have Mr. Ellington as an inspiring band teacher. He would give us the keys to his room at lunch to practice, and introduced to the Beatles and groups like Yes.

So let’s fast forward years later. Every day that passes, I realize how lucky I was to have these great teachers in my life, and that’s the word - luck. So this is why Rock Camp exists. We want every student to have an inspiring experience, make friends, feel what it’s like to master something and perform it…….and if the music speaks to them, they can make music a part of their life as they grow up. Having a great music education, should not be a luck thing. It should be available to everyone.

At Rock Camp and Dance Intensive in New Jersey and the Hamptons, we bring the best and the brightest musicians and dancers to inspire students, whether they are beginners or have significant experience. All in the spirit of what happened in Mr. Reed’s art room.

Rock Camp and Dance Intensive, a Summer Camp Experience Like No Other in the Hamptons and New Jersey

What makes Rock Camp the premier music camp in New Jersey? What makes a week of Rock Camp and Dance Intensive stand out as such a unique and amazing week of summer camp in the Hamptons?

A few things come to mind:

  1. Faculty.

We seek the best teachers and performers from NYC and from conservatories/colleges from around the country. Essentially we look for teachers who are mastering their craft (pushing the envelope to further their artistic careers) and who also love teaching. Every teacher at RC and DI has these two qualities.

  2. Creating a Fun and Social Environment.

OK, it’s summer! After spending a year in classrooms, we want our students making friends, spending time outside, and having a great time making music and working on dance. Whether a student is a beginner or an advanced student, we make sure everyone is inspired to achieve an entirely new level in the music and dance abilities, while also having a great time along the way!

  3. It’s all About the Student.

Every student is unique in his or her talent, and learns differently. This is why every day after camp lets out, we have a faculty meeting and speak about every student, making certain the student is getting what or she needs. Why don’t we have these students create a trio during lunch, and perform at the end of the end of the week? Does this student need extra attention in this area? How about choreographing a new piece this dance faculty member and these students? How can this student be inspired to achieve the next level in terms of repertoire, technique, artistic expression, and confidence? We are asking these type of questions and discussing solutions every day. We stay nimble during the day to make these mini-changes so every student is having an amazing experience at Rock Camp and Dance Intensive.
